About the author
Ann Page: Ann Page has held a number of senior management positions starting at Citibank, Crest Homes, National & Provincial B.S., and The Co-operative Bank where she has had responsibility for managing and providing a wide range of internal and external legal services. Ann is a Top 100 lawyer (2003) and now runs her own professional development and training consultancy Beyond the Brief (www.beyondthebrief.net) which she set up in 2005.

Richard Tapp: Richard Tapp is a Chartered Secretary and Solicitor. He has spent his career in commerce and industry, training with the National Coal Board and then working with Imperial Foods, and Blue Circle Industries PLC, where he was for six years Company Secretary and Group Legal Adviser, responsible for all company secretarial and legal matters worldwide. Since 2001 he has been Company Secretary and Director of Legal Services for Carillion plc, where he is responsible for all legal, secretariat, estates and insurance matters. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in law, and an MBA in Legal Practice Management. He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He has extensive experience of managing legal affairs both in the UK and internationally, having had responsibilities for lawyers and legal departments in the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He speaks and writes on legal practice management and corporate governance issues. In 2002 he led a complete review of the legal provisioning of Carillion plc, establishing the Carillion Legal Network using state of the art practice techniques to reduce the number of law firms used by some two thirds and bring very significant reductions in cost and improvements in quality and service in managing the group’s multi-million pound legal spend.
